GDR writer Brigitte Reimann is inseparably linked to her adopted home, the small town of Hoyerswerda in northern Saxony, where today a community center, located on the street named after her, a commemorative plaque adorning her former residence as well as a sculpture commemorate the author’s influential work. In 1960, Reimann follows the call for writers in the GDR to work in industrial production facilities in order to get to know, and subsequently turn into literature, the everyday life of working people ("Bitterfelder Weg"), her novel Ankunft im Alltag (Arrival in Everyday Life) giving the name to the socialist genre of so-called "Ankunftsliteratur" (arrival literature). However, Reimann’s initial enthusiasm for a "better" Germany in time gives way to growing doubts concerning the feasability of socialist progress, with the highly praised author becoming, in turn, an unwanted dissident, whose most important work, the unfinished Franziska Linkerhand, is being published posthumously in a heavily censored version and instrumentalized according to socialist ideology.

In 1954, the GDR government decides to build between Spremberg and Hoyerswerda, on an area of 25 square meters, a brown-coal refinery, at the time the largest in Europe and a signature project. Participating in the "Bitterfelder Weg" program, an attempt by socialist cultural policy makers to involve writers and creative artists in everyday working class life as well as, conversely, give workers access to art and culture, the young, committed writer Brigitte Reimann moves to the small town of Hoyerswerda. Here she works at Gaskombinat Schwarze Pumpe (a collective industrial plant) in order to get to know the everyday life of the workers, founds a Circle of Writing Workmen and Women, turning what she sees and experiences into literature. For almost ten years Reimann grapples with the divide of theory and practice regarding so-called socialist progress as it presents itself in the small town of Hoyerswerda, developing a love-hate relationship to her adopted home and eventually turning her back on it, disillusioned. Clearly, Hoyerswerda provides the template for her most important work, the unfinished Franziska Linkerhand, in which she critically examines socialism in terms of the division between utopian ideal and the reality of its being put into practice.
To this day, both Reimann’s name and legacy are alive in the small town in northern Saxony. Since 2006 the Brigitte Reimann community center has been located on 8 Brigitte Reimann street, next to her former residence, where a faithful replica of her apartment, including study and library, is on display as well as a frequently updated collection of documents pertaining to the history of reception of her literary work. The foundation is under the auspices of the Hoyerswerda art club "Freundeskreis der Künste und Literatur e.V." (Friends of the Arts and Literature).1

1954 beschließt die Staatsführung der DDR, zwischen Spremberg und Hoyerswerda auf einer Fläche von 25 Quadratmetern ein Braunkohleveredelungswerk zu errichten, seinerzeit das größte in Europa und ein Prestigeprojekt. Im Rahmen des Bitterfelder Weges, eines Versuches der sozialistischen Kulturpolitik, Schriftsteller und Kulturschaffende in das Leben der Arbeiterklasse einzubinden und umgekehrt den Werktätigen einen aktiven Zugang zu Kunst und Kultur zu ermöglichen, zieht auch die junge, engagierte Schriftstellerin Brigitte Reimann in die Kleinstadt Hoyerswerda. Hier arbeitet sie im Gaskombinat "Schwarze Pumpe" in der Produktion, um den Alltag der Arbeiter kennenzulernen, gründet einen Zirkel schreibender Arbeiter und verarbeitet Gesehenes und Erlebtes in ihren eigenen literarischen Texten. Fast zehn Jahre setzt sich Reimann mit der Realität des sozialistischen Aufbaus in der Kleinstadt auseinander, entwickelt eine Hassliebe zu ihrer Wahlheimat und kehrt ihr schließlich desillusioniert den Rücken. Hoyerswerda ist unumstritten die Vorlage des Schauplatzes ihres unvollendeten Hauptwerkes Franziska Linkerhand, in dem sie sich kritisch mit Anspruch und Wirklichkeit des sogenannten sozialistischen Fortschritts auseinandersetzt.
Reimanns Name und ihr literarisches Erbe sind bis heute präsent in der kleinen Stadt im Norden Sachsens.

1990 wurde die Straße nach der Schriftstellerin Brigitte Reimann umbenannt. Auf der Straße befindet sich außerdem die Brigitte-Reimann-Begegnungsstätte.

1990 wurde die Straße nach der Schriftstellerin Brigitte Reimann umbenannt. Dem deutschen Straßennamen ist, wie in der gesamten Stadt, auf dem Straßenschild auch die sorbische Bezeichnung hinzugefügt. Auf der Straße befindet sich außerdem die Brigitte-Reimann-Begegnungsstätte.
